Road and Bomb Dump Construction Data.
(notes taken from USAAF architects drawings)

 

(a) New roads to be 9` in width sited to suit conditions and standing timber
(b) To be capable of carrying traffic up to 10 tons and radius turns at corners
(c) To be not less than 30` and 50` where possible
(d) Construction to be 4" ash or gravel base well consolidated
(e) Existing roads may have defective places filled and consolidated
(f) To form even surface, Generally prepare for a surface with tar carpet
(g) 3/4" thick to wartime note No1 of the Road Research Laboratory Recommendations for tar carpet and surface dressings
(h) Generally all work to be as economical as possible as type traffic and storage will allow
(i) Any variation of above construction caused by local conditions, supply and materials to be decided by Supervising Officer
(j) Turning bays to be constructed where necessary
(k) All dumps and hardstanding to be suitably drained.
(l) Particular care to be taken that all new roads are drained
(m) Ditches to be piped where under hard standing and elsewhere where considered necessary
(n) Sitings of all dumps,huts, new roads to be taken as indicative only and will be governed by standing timber, but distances as on the schedule are to be rigidly adhered to and in no way reduced.
(o) Pine &
scrub to be cleared for a distance of 30` from surrounding buildings.
(p) Distance of 125yds to be maintained between dumps
(q) Distance of 250yds to be maintained between dumps and residential property.
(r) Concrete mix to ratio 1:2:4 for road building and hardstanding
