NEW
WOOD:- 168/TL864
335
Access
was via the Bures to Pebmarsh main road and was protected by a
Guard Post. Four huts known as "Component Stores" were
constructed on route the the wood. They were 36ft x 18ft with
a curved asbestos roof, presumably of Nissan Hut type construction.
New access roads were constructed to the wood and inside, to a
width of 9ft, with a minimum distance of 100yds between each dump.
Access road at the top right shows
4 Nissen Huts used as accommodation.
The bomb dump bays can be clearly seen beside the roadway inside
the wood. |

NEW WOOD still has it`s road
system intact (2005).
One resident recalls how a Mustang fighter
took off from Wormingford and had difficulty in reaching sufficient
flying altitude. It carried external fuel tanks which were made of similar
material to paper mache` which they could afford to lose over the sea
when they were empty. In this case the pilot jettisoned the tanks immediately
over New Wood and they crashed onto the stacks of bombs splitting open
and showing the area with 120 octane aviation fuel. Fortunately as the
bombs were not fitted with fuses no damage occurred.
