Donation of Bells to St Marys Parish Church

Just before his death he promised a subscription of £100 towards the proposed addition of two bells to complete the octave in the church tower and had undertaken to guarantee the full cost of the work £500 - in order that the project might begin immediately as it was hoped to have the eight bells ringing in time for the Festival of Britain celebrations in 1951.

Amazingly there were even appeals in Australia to raise funds for the Bells at Bures

Appeal For Bells At Bures Church To the Editor

Sir— Shortly before his death Dr. Thomas Wood decided that the time had come to complete the ring of eight bells at Bures Church by the addition of two new treble bells.
He himself offered to give a generous dona tion towards their cost. After his death it was felt that these bells would make the most fit ting memorial to him in his own village. Mrs. Wood gladly gave her consent and support, and the architect, bell-founders, bell ringers and other craftsmen concerned have gone out of their way to carry out his wishes.
Since Dr. Thomas Wood was not only a man of this parish or even of this country, but was known and loved throughout the Commonwealth, the people of Bures felt that an opportu nity to share with them in con tributing towards this memorial should be given to his many friends. In accordance with ancient custom the inscriptions on the bells read as follows: — I ring well: To bring Road cheer: In Festival Year: Tnom'as Wood's bell. In memory ol Thomas Wood, : Parsonage Hall, who was friend to one and all. The two bells are to be dedicated at 3 pm. on Saturday, April 28. by the Archdeacon of Sudbury.
C. H. SHARP. Vicar of Bures. Suffolk, England; Chaplain, Australian Forces, 1941-6.
[The late Dr. Thomas Wood was the author of 'Cobbers.' He has many friends in South Australia. The total cost of the bells is £500.

Contributions sent to 'The. Advertiser' will be forwarded to the Vicar.— Ed.
